If you were looking for an indication that Sherrod Brown really is massively liberal– not just on economic policy, but cultural topics, too– look no further than this email sent out by his campaign on Saturday. Yes, this really was signed by Gloria Steinem– she of pro-abortion advocacy and 1970’s and 1980’s era-feminism fame.
Note Steinem’s claim that Brown opponent Bernie Moreno wants to “nationalize women’s bodies.”
That seems like new, and potentially very potent, rhetoric in the abortion wars.
It also involves a claim that seems absolutely at odds with the positions on abortion taken by all of Trump, the GOP Platform, and Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance. All of those figures or documents now take a functionally pro-choice, anti-Roe stance– quite the opposite of what Steinem is asserting here. Even The Washington Post notes, “Trump and other Republicans had long called for national restrictions, and the previous party platform endorsed a federal ban after 20 weeks of pregnancy” (emphasis mine).
That language is now long-gone. But Steinem and her second-wave feminist worries about how Republicans will handle abortion if they wind up in control of the House, Senate and Presidency are apparently not.
